Wicked Tickets

Wicked is a musical theater combining music, song, spoken dialogue and dance. Its music and lyrics were given by Stephen Schwartz and follow a book by Winnie Holzman. The story is loosely based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, a parallel novel of the 1939 film of L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was produced by Universal Pictures and directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

The story revolves around Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and Galinda, later Glinda, the Good Witch of the North and their relationship. Their friendship suffers due to their opposing personalities and viewpoints and their duel on the same love interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. The star cast of wicked was Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, and Joel Grey as the Wizard.

After tryouts at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in May 2003, Wicked premiered in October 2003 on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre. The Broadway production's success engendered productions in Chicago, Los Angeles, London's West End and San Francisco, as well as international productions in Japan, Germany, Australia and elsewhere, and two North American tours that have visited over thirty cities in Canada and the United States.

Wicked won six Drama Desk Awards and an Olivier Award. Menzel won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Actress.

Story  of Wicked

Wicked is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, and is the story of green-skinned, unpopular Elphaba and bubbly Glinda.

Wicked explores the concept that the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, is a misunderstood, victimized person whose behavior was merely a reaction against a charlatan wizard's corrupt government. It also shows her relationship with the beautiful and ambitious Galinda Upland, who ultimately becomes Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.

The opening number, No one Mourns the Wicked, starts out with the citizens of Oz coming on stage singing a sort of "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" for Elphaba. Glinda comes down in her giant bubble machine and joins the singing. There are some flashbacks where we see the witch's father leave and the witch's mother who is soon visted by a stranger that never shows his face. The stranger gives the mother a little bottle of "green elixir" and then he vanishes. When the stage is lighted again, we see the witch's mother, now hugely pregnant. A midwife appears and the witch's mother gives birth to a green baby which is named Elphaba. Elphaba's father is ashamed and orders that Elphaba be taken away immediately. The scene goes back to everyone cheering that the witch is dead. Then a person in the crowd asks Glinda, "Is it true you were her friend?" The crowd is shocked and Glinda seems startled. Glinda explains, "Well I did know her, that is, our paths did cross... at school."
